Niccolo d'Ardia Caracciolo R.H.A (1941 – 1989) 'Tuscan Hill Town', Watercolour, 28 cm x 38 cm, Provenance: Sold at Adams (26/11/20).
Gifted Irish painter Niccolo Caracciolo was born in Dublin, but Tuscany was a second home for the artist, who kept a residence there throughout his life. He was the only son of Ferdinando Caracciolo, Prince of Cursi, a member of an old Italian family originally from Naples. His mother was Mary Purcell-Fitzgerald of Waterford Castle, where he was raised. At nineteen Caracciolo went to Florence to study art at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. In 1984 he became a full member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. Having passed away suddenly in 1989, the ‘Don Niccolo d'Ardia Caracciolo RHA Medal & Award’ is awarded in his memory. Caracciolo was a close friend of the collector, who often bought paintings directly from the artist.
