Very large Venetian painting (95 x 80 cm) showing the front of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. Unsigned, c.18th century. Was bought in London in the 1970's. In a very decorative gilt frame.

This superb early 18th century oil painting depicts a view of Andrea Palladio’s San Giorgio Maggiore, the 16th-century Benedictine church on the island of the same name. Here depicted is he old campanile (bell tower) first built in 1467, which fell in 1774. The replacement campanile was designed in 1726 by Scalfarotto and built in 1791 by Fra Benadetto Buratti in the neo-classical style of the nearby campanile in St. Mark's Square. The foreground is a flurry of gondolas, with their punters depicted in a swift painterly fashion. The rolling clouds and serene architecture create an ambient backdrop to the busy Venetian waterway.
