Two jaw dropping rare Chinese Huanghuali wood Jiaoyi folding horseshoe back armchairs, both dating to the late Qing Dynasty. The curved tripartite back has a central section with elaborately carved pierced openwork panel featuring a qilin in the clouds, the upper part containing a cartouche of curled dragon. There is delicate brass detailing throughout both chairs along the back and fine turned brass supports to the arms, both adding strength as well as highlighting key moments in the chairs design. The seat consists of woven curled rope and the legs end in block feet with brass detailed footrest.
Chinese folding chair designs can be found dating as far back as the Song dynasty and this particular style of chair is synonymous with those produced in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Originally only used by Emperors and princes, the Jiaoyi chairs accompanied their owners on the hunt. An almost identical example is currently exhibited at The Shanghai Museum in China and in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
