Original Emmanuel Mane Katz (1894-1962)'The Wedding. Gouache painting. Signed lower left. 20th century. Re-framed 10 years ago. A similar piece of the same subject sold at Sotheby's for 112,500 USD in 2018. An exact colored lithograph of this image was sold by Dane Fine Art this year.

The Jewish wedding was an influential theme for Mané-Katz, and the artist returned to the subject time and again over the course of his career. Born to an Orthodox family in the Ukraine in 1894, he studied art from an early age attending the School of Fine Arts in Kiev and the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. There he became close with Pablo Picasso among other prominent artists, and was associated with the École de Paris movement, a group of Jewish artists, primarily from Eastern Europe, who settled in Paris between the wars and whose style incorporated Expressionism and Fauvism. Finding inspiration for his subjects in scenes of Jewish daily life and ritual, Mané-Katz imbued his works with the bold colours and expressive brushstrokes that defined the movement.
