Burberry is a British luxury fashion house founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856 in Basingstoke, England. The company became renowned for weather-resistant outerwear after developing gabardine, a lightweight waterproof fabric, in 1879. Burberry later helped popularise the trench coat, originally designed for military use during the First World War. Its distinctive check pattern, trench coats and Equestrian Knight emblem have since become internationally recognised symbols of classic British fashion.
