Star Lot: A truly stunning original 17th century oil on panel painting from the Amsterdam school, after the style of Pieter Lastman. Depicts the old testament scene of Joshua reading the law after the conquest of Ai, where half the Israelites face Mt Gerizim and the other half Mt Ebal. You can see the covenant held in the centre of the two groups, creating a marked separation in the composition. There is particular detail in the elaborate clothing and jewellery of the figures in the front. A rare and truly fantastic piece. Please note the condition issues. Mm: 62 x 78 cm in frame.
Some minor losses to the work. The panel has been re framed at a later date with addition support added. The execution and subject matter is indicative of the Amsterdam school in the early 17th century. Lastman was the leading history painter in Amsterdam in the 1610s and 1620s, but is now mainly remembered as Rembrandt’s teacher. Lastman’s many works with biblical and mythological subjects served, in turn, as inspiration to several generations of Dutch history painters.
