DUTCH SCHOOL (c.18thc.) 'Still-life of a Bird’s Nest and Flowers', Oil.
The still life components of this painting belong to an allegorical tradition of abundance and the various stages in the cycle of life. The crystal blue eggs symbolise birth, as well as birds, who the contemporary Dutch believed communicated in a flirtatious manner. The blossoming flowers infer maturity, whilst old age is also presented in the gnarled log. These semiotic elements were repeatedly used in still lives of this type and are evident in many Dutch Golden Age paintings of the earlier century.
